Join the editors of The Long and Short of It literary journal for a short discussion bollowed by a generative workshop and unique publishing opportunity. What is Vocation of Location? It can be many things, but those answers tend to be personal and wide-ranging. Yet a sense of place can hold immense meaning within writing both literal and metaphorical. A place can feel as alive as the people populating it. A sense of place invokes atmosphere, themes, and reader immersion. Place can reflect emotion and create worlds while grounding readers. Indeed, the importance of place in writing is unquestionable, yet its possibilities offer endless versatility. A sense of place can be found across all genres, and even those bridging the gap between genres.
In this session, you’ll hear from the four editors of The Long and Short of It about how place plays a role in their own writing and why Door County is an inspirational location to consider place in writing. We will open the discussion to all participants to share how a sense of place influences their work, or how they hope to utilize place in future writing. Following our discussion, we will have a series of flash writing prompts applicable to all genres. Those willing to share with the group are welcome to do so. Bring a positive attitude and your preferred writing tools!
Unique Publishing Opportunity Every month, The Long and Short of It publishes three flash pieces of 300 words or less, followed by one long-form entry of 5,000 – 10,000 words.
