Poetry Meets Music

Write On is happy to continue our collaboration with Midsummer’s Music, Poetry Meets Music. At one concert in each of Midsummer’s series offerings, a poet will read a poem written in response to a piece of music to be performed. Poets were given recordings in advance with no identifying information as to the title, composer, era, etc., and were asked not to look up this information. The result is a poem composed entirely in response to the emotions or memories the music evokes.

Jessie Lynn McMains (she/they) is a poet and writer currently living in Door County, Wisconsin. She was the 2015-17 Poet Laureate of Racine, WI, and one of her poems received an Editor’s Choice commendation in the 2023 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards. When not writing, Jessie can be found making visual art, wandering in the woods and cemeteries, spending time with her family, or working her day job as Program Coordinator of the Door County Bookmobile.
