FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6 – 8!

In this five-day workshop, writers in grades 6 through 8 will build entire worlds from scratch. Each day zeroes in on a core element of storytelling: constructing the world your story lives in, developing characters who feel real, shaping a narrative that goes somewhere, finding your story’s core theme, and putting it all into action on the page. All genres and types of stories are welcome here. We will work on developing the stories that matter to you. By the end of the week, every writer will have the foundation of an original story and a better sense of how all the pieces work together.

Teaching Artist: Chris Bower is a Chicago-based teacher, playwright, and the author of the short story collection Little Boy Needs Ride (Curbside Splendor) and the novella “The Family Dogs”, which was part of the My Very End of the Universe novella collection published by Rose Metal Press. He is the creator of the Cafe Neckbeard (an imaginary Chicago cafe) performance series and an ensemble member of Curious Theatre Branch. His latest theatrical production, The Ship and the Sea, a play inspired by the sinking of the Swedish warship VASAwas at the Facility Theater in Chicago in Fall 2024.
