A GLIMPSE IN THE MIRROR: SEVEN POEMS WITH NAN COHEN

Session Description:

“We struggle all our lives,” observed the anthropologist Helen Fisher, “to know a few basic things about ourselves that the most casual passerby can tell us in a moment.” One of the most valuable aspects of a short poetry workshop is that we come to one another’s work as curious strangers. In this week-long workshop, we’ll give the gifts of our attention to one another’s poems: two already in progress, three finished, and two generated from prompts during the week. For each day our two-and-a-half-hour workshop meets, expect to spend at least two additional hours writing and reading. We’ll emerge from the week with a better sense of who we are at this moment and what in directions we might explore next.

Participants are expected to have prior workshop experience and have work-in-progress to share with other attendees.

• The class will be held in-person Monday through Friday, August 8 through 12, 12:00 – 2:30 pm.

• The week includes a reading by the three conference presenters — Lan Samantha Chang, Nan Cohen, and Kyoko Mori — and some social activities.

About Nan Cohen:

Nan Cohen is the author of two full-length poetry collections, Rope Bridge (2005) and Unfinished City (2017), and a chapbook, Thousand-Year-Old Words (2021).  Her work has appeared widely in magazines and anthologies, including in Ploughshares, Poet Lore, Poetry International, The New Republic, and Slate.

The recipient of a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, a Rona Jaffe Writer’s Award, and a Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, she has taught at Stanford University, Gettysburg College, the University of Southern California, the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, and the University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop. She lives in Los Angeles and directs the poetry programs of the Napa Valley Writers’ Conference.
