The Door County Published Authors Collective, a program of Write On, presents Inside the Book, a unique opportunity for writers and readers to learn more about how authors go about creating their books. Today’s panelists are Patrick Baird, Lynda Drews, and Margaret Philbrick.

Presenters

Patrick Baird’s most popular Door County mystery, Darkness at Death’s Door, was a local number one bestseller two years in a row. He has written two additional crime novels set in Door County, Van Hoke’s Caper and The Laszlo Pendulum. He produces weekly articles on crime fiction on his Morbid Imagination Substack. Patrick will discuss how he juggles unpeeling layers of characters and putting them in conflict with each while planning and plotting the novel to surprise readers.

Lynda Drews is the author of two fiction mysteries: Circle of Innocence, a Door County mystery, and Desparate Parallels, an international women’s mystery. She has also written two true crime stories. The Maid and the Socialite has been the number one book checked out in Brown County libraries for the past two years. One of Lynda’s books was made into a Netflix True Crime segment and another is optioned for a movie. Lynda will talk about the extensive research writing authentic mysteries and the importance of developing page-turning plots.

Margaret Philbrick is an award-winning novelist and poet. Her most recent novel, House of Honor: The Heist of Carvaggio’s Nativity, won first place in the Suspense, Mystery, and Thriller category and was named a Top Seven Indie Mystery and Thriller by Kirkus Reviews. Margaret will discuss how to pace action and build suspense over time.
