Turning Family History into Children’s Stories with Deborah Lakritz

We will delve into both unique and ordinary family memories using stories we’ve been told, objects and artifacts, letters, diaries, world history, and more to discover and create compelling children’s stories that have a universal appeal. I will share examples of the research I’ve done on my own family’s history and the picture book manuscript that was born out of that process. In addition, we will study notable, award-winning examples of children’s books that are rooted in the author’s family history.

Deborah Lakritz is the author of picture books Say Hello, Lily; Joey and the Giant Box; and A Place to Belong: Debbie Friedman Sings Her Way Home. A middle grade novel, Things that Shimmer, is forthcoming.  As a mental health professional with a Masters Degree in Social Work who has worked in family service agencies and public schools, leading grief and loss groups, divorce support groups, and other supportive services for elementary aged children, she is always looking to read, share, and create stories for children that support emotional health and growth. She lives in Mequon with her husband where they raised their five children.
