Write On provides a place of solitude and reflection on nearly 40 acres of woods, orchards, and meadows nestled between the water of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. In the heart of Door County, writers can work on a current project and find inspiration for the next without the distractions that hound them at home.
Eligibility: We welcome applications from emerging and established writers in any contemporary literary genre. Applications are also accepted from literary arts administrators who need time away to envision a new program, edit materials, or find renewal for their own creative work.
Residents must be at least 21 years of age. Applications from students currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program are welcome. Residents who need to travel with children or other family members are eligible to apply, though there may be restrictions on accommodations. Previous residents are encouraged to apply again. Your former residency neither helps nor hurts your current application.
We encourage applications from pairs of writers who would like to share a residency. Individual applicants may be awarded a shared residency with another writer. Only in extremely rare circumstances will more than two writers be in residence at any given time.
Duration of Residency: Write On, Door County offers residencies of one week to one month. Typically, most residents have stayed for one week, arriving on a Sunday and departing the following Sunday. Residencies of less than a week are discouraged but may be possible with compelling evidence of need and consultation with the artistic director.
Accommodations as of June 2020: There is a bedroom/writing room suite located on the first floor with a private bath. The second floor has two spacious bedrooms and one bath. Typically, there are only two residents at a time, giving each writer private working space. In the rare cases that a third writer is included in the residency or for those writers who are traveling with family members, the upper floor second bedroom is available for use.
Bedrooms are furnished with queen-sized beds and separate writing areas. All linens and towels are provided. There are laundry facilities on the premises. Residents have access to a full kitchen and large living area on the first floor. The kitchen is equipped with basic supplies, including dishes, pots, and pans.
In a meadow behind the house, The Coop, the writing studio of the late writer Norbert Blei, provides a very special workspace for writers during the warmer months of the year.
Across the road from the residency house is the writing center. The staff offices are located in the center, along with a library, gathering space, and classroom. Most residents’ programs — classes, workshops, readings — will take place in the center.
There are two walking trails on the property: a quarter-mile trail on the south side of the property behind the house and a half-mile trail on the north side, behind the writing center. These trails offer residents with a peaceful, meditative walk and wind through open meadows, old orchards, and hardwood forests.
Residents’ Responsibilities: In exchange for a residency, writers agree to complete a community service project in consultation with Write On’s artistic director. In many cases, this will take the form of a public writing workshop but other opportunities are possible, such as a reading or lecture, visits to schools or senior centers, or other activities.
Residents are responsible for their own food and travel (see below for more information). Smoking is not permitted in the house, The Coop, or the Writing Center.
Application Deadlines: Applications are accepted year-round. You are strongly encouraged to submit your application eight months prior to your desired residency date.
Application Fee: $40
