What an amazing opportunity to spend the beginning of summer in Door County! I was deeply grateful to Jerod, Lauren (on her first weeks on the job!), Michael, Bill, and the rest of your board for having the vision to create Write On, Door County and steward its growth. It is an amazing and sustaining gift for a writer to have time to write, to think, to read, to plan and think about a novel’s structure without the distractions of daily life.
Norbert Blei’s Coop was a delightful place to write, especially because there is no internet there! I also loved writing upstairs.
I was also inspired by the ladies in the memoir writing group at Scandia Village. They were really good writers and they were funny and wise and meeting them was surely a highlight of my stay. I loved everything about being here — your hospitality and the gentle landscape are a potent recipe for the perfect place to write.
Many folks wrote about how much they got done. I got a considerable amount done too, but there were also moments when I wanted to pull my hair out or when I wondered if I was an imposter or would ever be able to finish my novel. I am heartened to report that after two weeks here, I have far greater confidence that I will finish it. Sitting at Norbert Blei’s desk, I knew I was not the first person to struggle to find the right word or capture an elusive emotion. Keep writing, keep sitting (oy!), take a walk, then try again. Write On!
