Writing the Humorous Personal Essay with Jeremy Owens
Do you have funny personal stories you’ve been wanting to share? Do you want to write a hilarious polemic on the latest dance craze, your favorite movie, or the 75 reasons to love candy corn? Maybe you’re just looking to add some humor to your writing. In this session, we’ll take an in-depth look at various forms of personal funny essays and provide tips to turn up the funny in your writing. You’ll do some humor writing of your own and we’ll read some great stuff too — essays, articles, op-eds, and more to help you find inspiration for your work!

Teaching Artist: Jeremy Owens is the creator, producer, and host of the long running live-lit/storytelling series You‘re Being Ridiculous. His work has been featured in Chicago Magazine and Alma, as well as many bars and theatre spaces all over Chicago. His one-man show, “Big Gay Nightmare,” premiered at Steppenwolf this summer to sold out audiences. Jeremy is a Core Faculty member at StoryStudio Chicago, where he teaches storytelling, performance, and queer nonfiction writing.
