ONLINE: THE CRAFT OF WRITING SERIES: Picture Books with John Coy and Bao Phi
December 3 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, repeating until December 17, 2020
The Craft of Writing Series is a three-week program that takes place virtually the first through third Thursdays of each month. Each month focuses on a different genre or form of writing.
Thursday, December 3rd: Author Conversation
Join award-winning authors Bao Phi and John Coy for a conversation on the craft of writing the picture book.
Thursday, December 10th: A Different Journey: My Path to Picture Books
When asked to speak about my journey to my first picture book, I often feel pressured to fit it into an existing narrative: work hard, find an agent, grind it out until it gets done. But my path to it, as my path to poetry, was not typical. I will give a short presentation on how A Different Pond went from a rough poem to, inexplicably, a Charlotte Zolotow award winner for Outstanding Writing in a Picture Book, and open the rest of the time for a conversation with participants. The aim of this event is not to promote exceptionalism but rather suggest that sometimes you have to make a road that no one will make for you.
Thursday, December 17th: Write Your Story: Creating a Picture Book with John Coy
Picture book text can seem deceptively simple. In few words, writers convey a world. In this workshop, we’ll take a look at different picture book texts and the range of possible subjects. Then we’ll get a chance to write a draft of our own. If you’ve always wanted to write a picture book, or even if you have not, this is your chance.
The cost for this three-week program is $150.00. Write On members receive a 10% discount. To become a member, please click here. To register online for this program, please click the button below.. For other registration options, please call 920.868.1457.
