Write On members are invited to join us for an informal morning with writer-in-residence Barbara Williams. While in residence at Write On, Barbara will be working on a final draft of her translation of the Swedish novella Jag ringer mina bröder (I Call My Brothers) by critically-acclaimed author Jonas Hassen Khemiri. Barbara will share insight into the process of translation and answer questions. Coffee and Swedish sweets will be served. This event is free. Seating is limited; reservations are required. Please reserve your space by Friday, December 21.
What Barbara Williams has to say about Jag ringer mina bröder:
Jag ringer mina bröder began as a prose poem written in December 2010 in response to a car bombing in Stockholm that holiday season. Khemiri expanded the poem into a novella in 2012. The novella has been adapted into a play but, to date, there is no English translation of the book itself. Khemiri’s works add sharp, timely, and touching contributions to the discourse on immigration, integration, and identity. I began my translation of this novella during my graduate studies at the University of Illinois. My thesis research focused on migration and cultural adaptation in Sweden, and I found Khemiri’s works to be thought-provoking, approachable, and relatable examinations of the ideas of belonging, otherness, perceptions, and examination of the self.
