May 14 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 5:00pm on Thursday, repeating until Thursday, May 28, 2020

Through writing exercises and discussion of poems, participants will gain the tools they need to write poems of loss and regret.

THE POEMS WE CARRY with Donna Hilbert

What cannot be said will be wept — Sappho

We all carry them–those stories of loss and regret so overwhelming and painful that we cannot find an entry point from which to write. Yet, we can’t put the stories behind us. Sometimes we have the illusion that we might write one big poem or prose piece and then be done with it. That plan seldom works.

This class will take the opposite approach. Our strategy will be to look at one “telling detail,” or one anecdote at a time, with the aim of ending with a suite of small poems on weighty subjects — a lyric sequence that tells a story. Each session will begin with a generative exercise and a look at an exemplary poem. There will be time for independent writing, private consultation, and sharing and discussing work in progress.

Donna Hilbert’s latest book is Gravity: New & Selected Poems. She is a monthly contributing writer to the online journal Verse-Virtual. Her poems and essays have appeared in print and online venues including, Braided Way Magazine, Rattle, Serving House Journal, Chiron Review, The Writer’s Almanac, The Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. She writes and leads private workshops for both beginners and professional writers in coastal Southern California, where she makes her home.

Class meets Thursday evenings, May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 5 – 8 pm. Tuition for the four-week class is $180, which includes a private consultation with the instructor. To register, please click here. For other registration options, please call 920-868-1457.
