Write On is pleased to enter our fourth year of collaboration with Midsummer’s Music!
Local and visiting poets were asked to create original poems based on music to be played at one of Midsummer’s concerts. Poets were sent a CD of music to be performed the night of their concert, but with no information as to the composers or other details. Poets were asked to write a poem or poems in response to the emotions evoked by the music they heard. Music and Poetry will take place at eight of Midsummer’s concerts, occurring at different venues throughout the county. The featured poet for tonight’s concert is Sylvia Cavanaugh.

A Kohl Fellow, Sylvia Cavanaugh teaches social studies at Sheboygan North High school. She prefers an inquiry-based approach to the study of history, and her students participate in the National History Day program. Cavanaugh is also a Pushcart Prize nominated poet and has published two collections of poetry. She is a contributing editor for Verse-Virtual: An Online Community of Poets and she is the North High Poetry Club advisor. Her students are active participants in the Sheboygan chapter of 100 Thousand Poets for Change. She believes that the integration of the arts into the social studies curriculum deepens students’ understanding of content and allows them to engage with the material through personal creative expression.
