PLAY READING: ME AND HER SHADOW
September 11 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
ME AND HER SHADOW
In October of 2019, Write On held a special edition of Art/Speaks with the Door County Playwrights’ Collective. Held at Margaret Lockwood Gallery, playwrights were encouraged to use the artwork on display as inspiration for a one-act play. The art could have inspired the play’s setting or influenced one of the characters, or become a set prop.
Playwright Chris Milton took her inspiration from one of the sculptures by Dan Bresnahan. Me and Her Shadow, a brisk 15-minute one-act play, portrays the essence of family as bad jokes, fond recollections, harsh realities, and shocking revelations test the love two sisters feel for each other — and themselves. Actors Ann K. Birnschein and Donna Johnson read the parts of the sisters, Holly and Carol Newman.
Join us for a reading of the play, followed by a conversation with the playwright and the actors, all in the setting that served as the original inspiration.
This event is presented in person. Please review our Covid-19 policy below. Though the event is free, registration is required as seating is limited. To register online for the program, please click the button below. For other registration options, please call 920-495-0220.
Chris Milton has been involved in community theater since high school, including many performances in Door County over the past 27 years. Recent acting highlights are Kate in All My Sons (Rogue Theater), Marty in Circle Mirror Transformation (Isadoora Theatre) and Head Nun in The House of Blue Leaves (Third Avenue Playhouse). In the fall of 2019, participation in ART/SPEAKS inspired her to begin a one-act play, sparked by artwork titled “Shadow” by Dan Bresnahan. Fueled by the lack of live theater in 2020, Chris found the time (and the patience) to finish the project and is gratified to have it presented as a reading. She hopes other artists, of all persuasions, will embrace this and similar programs that encourage them to expand their horizons.
Ann K. Birnschein (Holly Newman) is excited to be involved as an actor again after a hiatus from theatrical performing. This Door County native has been involved in theatre since age eight and connected with Isadoora since 2003 (The Fantasticks). An actress/singer/musician, Ann holds a BA in theater and graphic arts. In her spare time, she sings with the Peninsula Singers and church choir, plays trumpet with the Peninsula Symphonic Band, enjoys biking in Century rides, and works as Marketing Director for Northern Sky Theater. Favorite acting credits include The Christmas Schooner, Side by Side by Sondheim, The King and I as Anna, Working, Striking 12, and directing Cover of LIFE. She thanks loved ones for supporting her journey in life.
Donna Johnson (Carol Newman)credits Isadoora Theatre Company with her start in community theater in Door County . . . first as a volunteer reader at rehearsals in early 2013, which then led to a part in a staged reading of Bloody Poetry. She has been in staged productions at Rogue Theater, and Isadoora Theatre Company, as well as readings for Theatre M, the Third Avenue Playhouse Winter Play Reading Festival for three years and was an ensemble member of the “Right to Live” multi-media project in March 2019, and a zoom reading with Door Shakespeare for Door County Reads. She has also participated in many Playwrights’ Collective and Write On Door County events.
