Learn techniques for effectively writing dialogue

DEPTH THROUGH DIALOGUE with Dipika Mukherjee


In this workshop with novelist Dipika Mukjerjee, we’ll begin by addressing problems with dialogue. Participants will then write their own dialogue-heavy scenes. We will address why dialogue is not written or spoken speech; how dialogue can effectively build tension; the mechanics of effective dialogue writing; and how to avoid stereotypes and cringe-worthy dialogue in multicultural scenes. This workshops is appropriated for both new and seasoned writers.

Dipika Mukherjee is the author of the novels, Shambala Junction, winner of the UK Virginia Prize for Fiction, and Ode to Broken Things, longlisted for the Man Asia Literary Prize as Thunder Demons, as well as the short story collection Rules of Desire. Her writing appears in numerous literary journals and in the anthology The Best Small Fictions 2019. She is on the curating team and a featured writer in My America: Immigrant and Refugee Writers Today, a popular exhibit at the American Writers Museum in Chicago showcasing the vitality of migrant and refugee voices in American discourse. Mukherjee is core faculty at StoryStudio Chicago and teaches at the Graham School at University of Chicago.
