February 22 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Hear members of our community read poetry in their native tongues.

Celebrate International Mother Language Day with Write On as people share poems and stories in their native languages! This reading not only celebrates the languages of the world spoken here in Door County, it also invites audience members to relax and appreciate the rhythm and music of poetry, rather than focus on the poem’s “message.” Past languages presented at this annual event have included Bulgarian, French, German, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Ukranian, and Walloon.

Speakers of languages other than English are sought to take part!

Native speakers are preferred, but English speakers who are fluent in other languages are also welcome to take part. Participants are asked to read a poem by a favorite writer of their native language, a poem from childhood, or a poem of their own creation. All ages are welcome to take part. Write On staff are happy to discuss reading options with interested readers. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Artistic Director Jerod Santek at jerod@writeondoorcounty.org or 920-868-1457.

In 1999, the United Nations proclaimed International Mother Language Day “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by the people of the world.” February 21st was selected as the date to commemorate the 1952 shooting and killing of students demonstrating for recognition of Bangla as one of the two national languages of what was then Pakistan.
