A VISUAL ARTIST WHO WRITES (AFTER VGB) with Susy Bielak

 

In a talk titled after fellow artist Verónica Gerber Bicecci’s self-description, artist, writer, and curator Susy Bielak will present some of the many different ways in which the visual and verbal meet. In addition to sharing from her own work, Bielak will discuss other artists’ techniques, including Sophie Calle’s use of photography and diaristic/observational writing, Glenn Ligon and Bethany Collins’ use of text and erasure, and artist books and multimedia collaborations (e.g., Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes’ “The Sweet Flypaper of Life”).

Susy Bielak is an artist, writer, curator, and educator. Her art and writing respond to issues including migration, displacement, and the relationship between domestic life and disaster. Growing up in diasporic Latin American and Jewish communities in Pittsburgh at a time of its de-industrialization spurred her ongoing interest in the interplay of people and place. She is a 2020-21 BOLT artist in residence at Chicago Artists Coalition. Her work has been collected and exhibited widely, including by the International Print Center, Museo Tamayo, San Diego Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center, and her writing has appeared in numerous journal.
