In partnership with the Peninsula Pulse, Write On presents the annual Hal Prize in Photography, Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction. Conducted annually since 2001, the mission of the Peninsula Pulse’s Hal Prize is to encourage and appreciate artistic expression through various literary forms and photography.

The contest has showcased works from individuals of all ages and backgrounds – novice writers and photographers to professionals. Over the years, judges of differing areas of expertise have chosen the winning works and have included New York Times bestselling authors Michael Perry and Lesley Kagan, award-winning poets Heid E. Erdrich and Bruce Dethlefsen, and photographers Wing Young Huie and Kevin J. Miyazake.
The prize includes publication in the Peninsula Pulse’s annual Literary Issue (the first Friday of August), reaching a readership of 18,000, a week-long residency at Write On to be taken in the following calendar year, and a cash award of up to $150.
