“It’s easy to work when the soul is at play,” writes Emily Dickinson. And hard to work well when it’s not, Jane Ewens and Dion Kempthorne would add for emphasis. In this workshop, Jane, a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology, will discuss the scientific research on the importance of infant play in cognitive and emotional development, with a special emphasis on language skills, and Dion, a professor of English and a poet, will discuss the exceptional wordplay at work in Emily Dickinson’s poetry. The class will then explore the likely early origins of imaginative language and it’s possible value in enhancing our daily activities of working and playing cordially and productively together.
