Write On is happy to resume our collaboration with Midsummer’s Music, Poetry Meets Music. At one concert in each of Midsummer’s series offerings, a poet will read a poem written in response to a piece of music to be performed. Poets were given recordings in advance with no identifying information as to the title, composer, era, etc., and were asked not to look up this information. The result is a poem composed entirely in response to the emotions or memories the music evokes.

For tonight’s concert, we are pleased to present multigenre writer Mauricio Kilwein Guevara. Tonight’s concert is Remembering Rachmaninoff, Remembering Tchaikovsky. To order tickets, please visit Midsummer’s Music

Mauricio Kilwein Guevara is a poet, fiction writer, playwright, essayist, translator, performer, activist, and educator born in Belencito, Colombia and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has won national and international awards for his writing, including the Contemporary Poetry Series Competition (Postmortem, 1992) and an International Latino Book Award (POEMA, 2010). Across genres, he is known for a seriocomic writing style that investigates the overlapping of voices, experiences, and tensions that complicate immigrant life in the United States and throughout the global Latin American diaspora. He is Professor Emeritus of English and former Coordinator of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
