Making the Stomach Believe: A Fiction Workshop with Scott Winkler

Saturday, August 12, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

As writers of fiction, we produce imaginative pieces that defy the norms of our daily lives–but in the process, we inevitably straddle the line between truth as it happens and truth as it feels.  We incorporate the places, faces, and feelings indicative of the former, all while attempting to capture the latter.  This workshop will focus on fostering techniques designed to help your fiction succeed in what Tim O’Brien calls “making the stomach believe,” empowering you to construct narratives that feel authentic regardless of their setting.

DSC01630Scott Winkler is a teacher and writer whose roots are firmly anchored in rural Wisconsin.  The Wide Turn Toward Home, his collection of short stories and its eponymous novella, was published by Pocol Press, and his fiction, poetry, and scholarship have appeared in journals ranging from Elysian Fields Quarterly to Aethlon to The Journal of Popular Culture among others.  Twice nominated for Best New American Voices while a graduate student, Scott is the winner of the 2016 Hal Prize in Fiction and the 2012 Winning Writers Sports Poetry & Prose Contest.
