Best Book I Never Read

October 4 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

We’ve all done it. Our high school English teacher or a college lit professor assigned a novel that we had every good intention of reading, but time slipped away. So, the night before the exam, we scanned the Cliff Notes or watched the film adaptation. We didn’t do so well on the exam.

Here’s a chance to read those books without having to worry about your grade point average! Enjoy some of the fine crafted beers of Starboard Brewing Company and Cornerstone Pub (winter)/Door County Brewing Company (summer) and meet others who, like you, missed reading the book the first time around. Love the book? Hate the book? Don’t understand the book? Come out and tell us about it!

FrankensteinConsidering that Halloween is right around the corner, what could be a better selection this month than Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which was published 200 years ago this year?

Few creatures of horror have seized readers’ imaginations and held them for so long as the anguished monster of Frankenstein. The story of Victor Frankenstein’s terrible creation and the havoc it caused has enthralled generations of readers and inspired countless writers of horror and suspense. Considering the novel’s enduring success, it is remarkable that it began merely as a whim of Lord Byron’s. With Frankenstein, she succeeded admirably in the task she set for herself: to create a story that, in her own words, “would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror — one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart.”
